         Glossary of Terms

Glossary of Terms and Product Descriptions:

Field Tile/Plain Tile:    These terms refer to the tile either floor or wall that comprises the majority of the space to be filled.  It doesn't refer to trim, decorative pieces or any specialty pieces or shapes.

Listello/Border Tile/Decorative Border:    These terms refer to a piece or pieces of tile that has a decorative design on the face.  In many cases, the background of these pieces match the background of the field tile.  Also, these tiles are used in a linear fashion or a running pattern.  Typically, they are much more expensive than the field tile are sold separately -- not in cartons.

Decorative Tile/Insert Deco:    These terms refer to a singular decorative piece with a design on its face.  In many cases the decorative pieces background matches the background of the field tile.  Also, the design in many cases is very similar to the listello for that tile.  This allows an area to be tiled with perhaps both a border tile and some random decorative tiles to match and be inserted.  These tiles are typically much more expensive than the plain tiles and are sold separately, not in cartons.

Bullnose/Trim/Finished Piece:    These terms refer to a singular piece of tile that is made specifically to match a plain tile and to finish off or end a tile job that doesn't have a built in ending.  For example, floor tile would typically end at a wall and not need trim.  But, in a doorway, trim would end it with a finished look.  On a wall you may run the tile to the ceiling or stop it above the shower head.  If stopping in the midst of a field like above the shower head then you would use trim to finish it and you would use trim on the sides.  The configuration of a trim tile varies in length, but its distinguishing feature is a rounded or beveled edge that is glazed.

Die-lot:    All tile is manufactured in lots.  The size of these lots varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.  In this process each lot can be somewhat different from the next lot.  Therefore, it is always recommended that extra material is bought as to avoid possibly needing more material later that does not match.
